Life is Happening For You, Not to You

There’s always going to be hard in life. That’s not something I say lightly. I’ve lived it. I’ve felt it down to my bones—the kind of pain that makes it hard to breathe, hard to pray, hard to even hope. If you’ve walked through heartbreak, betrayal, or divorce, then you know what I mean.

I used to think the hard seasons were punishment. That I must have missed something, done something wrong, or disappointed God beyond repair. I believed the lie that pain equaled failure. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Life is not happening to you. It’s happening for you.

It’s a shift in perspective that didn’t come easily. It came through tears. Through sleepless nights. Through gut-wrenching prayers whispered on my living room floor when I didn’t think I could face one more day. It came as I slowly realized that God wasn’t abandoning me in the middle of the storm—He was meeting me there.

I remember standing in my kitchen one night after my divorce, looking around at a life I no longer recognized. Everything felt broken. I felt broken. But in that moment, I sensed God whisper something I’ll never forget:

“I’m not punishing you. I’m preparing you.”

That changed everything.

I began to see that maybe—just maybe—the unraveling of my life was actually the beginning of something new. Something sacred. Something I wouldn’t have chosen but could learn to trust.

There will always be hard. But there will also always be hope.

Hard doesn’t mean hopeless. It means human. It means you’re alive. And when you’re a woman of faith, it also means you’re being shaped, refined, strengthened. Not crushed. Not forgotten.

God is not surprised by your pain. He’s not disappointed by your breakdown. He’s present in it. He’s working through it.

Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”

Even the hard things. Especially the hard things.

That verse doesn’t mean everything will feel good. It means that God is so powerful, so kind, so sovereign, that He can take even the darkest chapters of your story and use them to write something beautiful.

So what if we stopped asking, “Why is this happening to me?” and started asking, “What is God doing in me through this?”

Friend, I don’t know what your hard is today. Maybe it’s divorce. Maybe it’s loneliness. Maybe it’s watching your identity unravel after losing a role you never thought you’d let go of. Whatever it is, I want you to know:

  • You are not weak for feeling it.
  • You are not failing because it hurts.
  • You are not forgotten just because it’s hard.

Let your pain lead you closer to God, not further from Him. Let it teach you to lean in, to grow, to trust—because healing is happening, even if you can’t see it yet.

You’re not just surviving. You’re being transformed. And yes, there will always be hard in life. But there will also always be God—faithful, near, and working all things together for you.
